Winona Rose Wyman Matthews passed away on November 25, 2016, at her home in Raymond, Mississippi, surrounded by family and caregivers. She was 98 years old.
Winona was born on August 24, 1918, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was the second child born to William H. and Nona Wyman. The older brother, Millard F. Wyman, predeceased Winona , as have her parents and her husband.
On February 14, 1936, Winona and H.T. (Sonny) Matthews were married in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1943 they moved with their three small children to Raymond, Mississippi, where they continued to live...

Winona Rose Wyman Matthews passed away on November 25, 2016, at her home in Raymond, Mississippi, surrounded by family and caregivers. She was 98 years old.
Winona was born on August 24, 1918, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was the second child born to William H. and Nona Wyman. The older brother, Millard F. Wyman, predeceased Winona , as have her parents and her husband.
On February 14, 1936, Winona and H.T. (Sonny) Matthews were married in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1943 they moved with their three small children to Raymond, Mississippi, where they continued to live a loving and happy life.
Winona was a very active and committed member of her church and community. She served in leadership roles in the local P.T.A., Raymond Culture Club, Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club, Raymond United Methodist Church, as well as other organizations.
Winona obtained an A.A. from Hinds Junior College, while still a young mother. For a number of years, she taught kindergarten at the Raymond Baptist Church.
She is survived by her three children; Melanie Matthews Anthony, Ashville, North Carolina; William H. Matthews, (Carol), 0f Ashville, North Carolina; John Richard Matthews (Cathy), of Owenton, Kentucky; and a nephew, Joe R. Wyman, (Lisa) of San Francisco, California. In addition she had 3 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Winona was loved and honored by many members of her community. Her death, after 98 years of active life, represents a transition in an era of the community history.
The family would like to extend loving appreciation to the people of Raymond, and especially to the four caregivers, who loved Winona through the last several years: Mary Wansley; Ollie Herring; Mary Dixon; and Becky Laney. And a special thanks to her long-time friend, Martha Ferguson.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Wednesday November 30, 2016 at Raymond United Methodist Church, preceded by visitation from 12:00pm to 1:45pm.
