Jamie Anne Richards Hughes took her last breath in this life on June 16, 2017 and took her first breath in Heaven beside her Husband-P. Leo Hughes Jr. They are reunited after 4 years and she gave Daddy the best birthday present ever.

Jamie was born in Jackson MS on January 28, 1937 to James and Alene Richards. She spent her childhood in Jackson MS but, moved to Yazoo City and graduated from Yazoo City High School. Jamie attended and excelled in the RN program at Gilfoy Nursing College. She earned the honor of Miss Mississippi Baptist Hospital. Jamie spent the next 30 years as Director of Nursing of various hospitals, to include Kings Daughters Hospital in Brookhaven, MS.

Jamie had an incredibly prosperous career in nursing and was responsible for the passage of many laws RNs today abide by as a leader of the Mississippi Nursing Association, in conjunction with her Father-In-Law-P. L. Hughes Sr., who served in the Mississippi House of Representatives for 5 terms. It was once said, “If Jamie wants to get a law passed, she will not stop short of the Governor to get it done”.

In the last 10 years of Jamie’s career, she became a pioneer in the Cost Containment segment of the healthcare Industry. Jamie was instrumental in the creation of a Fee Schedule to contain the medical costs and in constructing Utilization Review protocol for the medical and surgical procedures. Jamie founded Hughes & Associates in 1991.

Jamie’s greatest joy was the love of her life of 55 years-P. Leo Hughes Jr. Everyone who knew her knew she was Leo’s “Honey”. She leaves 3 children-P. Leo Hughes III (Terri), Annette McDonal and Jimmy Hughes. 6 grandchildren- Slater (Mindy), Brecken, Weldon & Harleigh Hughes. Jamielee & Adam McDonal. One great grandchild-Peyton. Her sister Merle Varner (Jim), brother Morris Richards (Nancy), and a host of nieces and nephews.

Jamie was the perfect Southern Belle that lit up any room that she walked into. She never met a stranger and even once danced with Elvis at a Jaycees Convention in Memphis.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 21 from 12:00-2:00 at First Baptist Madison with the funeral to follow. There will be a brief graveside service at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland.
