Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Lakewood Memorial Park for Ellen Rose Batson Breed. She passed away peacefully at her home in Jackson on August 1. Her nephew, the Reverend Schuyler Batson, Jr., will conduct her home-going celebration. Mrs. Breed was born on February 10, 1923, in Hillsdale, Mississippi, to Oscar and Nellie Batson. She grew up in Lyman and Gulfport.
Upon graduation from Gulfport High School, Mrs. Breed attended Ward Belmont Finishing School in Nashville, Tennessee. She graduated from the University of Mississippi with a degree in music, and was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.
In 1945, Ellen Rose married her high school sweetheart, William Jack Breed. They spent 48 wonderful years together, until his death in 1993.
Mrs. Breed was an active member of many social, music, and philanthropic organizations throughout her life. She was a tireless volunteer, particularly at Woodland Hills Baptist Church, where she established the graded choir program for children. She shared her innovative, successful curriculum and knowledge with many churches throughout the state, conducting clinics and training directors. She taught Sunday School, fed countless youth groups, and joyfully provided piano accompaniment for classes and concerts, sharing her gift and love for people and music.
Ellen's greatest joy was her family. She will be sweetly remembered as the best Grandmamma ever. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Nellie Batson, brothers Glen Batson, Dr. Randolph Batson, her twin, the Reverend Schuyler Batson, and her beloved husband, Jack Breed. She is survived by her daughters, Nell Inda Breed Lutken and Mary Ellen Breed Harris; son-in-law Donald Lutken, Jr.; grandchildren Donald Lutken, III., and his daughter Mary Kathryn; Jack Lutken, his wife Lee Ann, their children, Ella Rose and Lucie; Christian Lutken, his wife Kindal, and their daughter Kinlee; Ellen Lutken; Megan Harris; and Max Harris. In addition, she is survived by first cousins Dr. Blair Batson, John Batson, and many nieces and nephews, to whom she was fondly known as Aunt Sister. As much as they will miss her, they all rejoice in celebration of her graduation to eternal life with her Lord and Savior.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Linda Coleman and her crew of angels, as well as Camellia Hospice for boundless compassion and loving care. Much appreciation is extended to her precious loyal friends, whom she loved so dearly.
Memorials may be sent to the Blair Batson Children's Hospital.
